Padre Pio’s Body on Display

It has finally happened–more than three months after the Vatican first announced that it would: St. Pio of Pietrelcina’s exhumed body has gone on display. He died September 23, 1968, and the exhumation of his body two months ago was done in order to display it–a common practice for Catholic saints on a prominent anniversary of the death.

A wax face was created from photographs by experts in London, replacing what was said to be only skeletal remains to the head. The rest of the body is in its decomposed state, including blackened but still visible fingers. But given the face, it all bears an uncanny resemblance to the living Padre Pio, from his later years.

Italians and others are obtaining (required) tickets to view the body at the Padre Pio shrine in southeastern Italy, San Giovanni Rotondo. The viewing began yesterday.

There is an email going around that his body on display is the actual body that has never decomposed.I had the email, but deleted it two days ago.I wanted to share it,because whoever made that email is giving out false information to everyone.

It seems macabre to remove his body from the tomb after so many years !

We’re planning a trip to Italy in august 2009. We would like to visit Padre Pio’s Shrine. When does the current homage come to a close ?
