William and Catherine Blake

One of my favorite couples in history, William and Catherine Blake married today, in 1782.

William and Catherine lived like Adam and Eve in an unstained Garden of Eden. They used to read aloud to each other from Milton’s Paradise Lost, naked.

Toward the end of his life, when William wanted to burn some of his manuscripts, Catherine wouldn’t allow it.

Catherine once said to some visitors who were looking for her husband, “I have very little of Mr. Blake’s company. He is always in Paradise.”

When Blake was on his deathbed in 1827, his last painting was a portrait of Catherine. And then, he spent his time singing. He said that death was simply like passing from one room to the next. I love that.
