What Does it Matter if Cardinal Newman was Homosexual?

There is absolutely no question from any sector or anyone that Cardinal John Henry Newman spent his entire life as a celibate. So, what does it matter if he was homosexual rather than heterosexual?

The process for Cardinal Newman’s beatification is in its final stages, and as a result, there have been many “investigations” going on in various parts of the Catholic Church into his past, his journals, and his relationships. There has been great interest in the Cardinal’s close relationship with lifelong friend Ambrose St. John, including the reasons why Cardinal Newman may have wanted to be buried next to him.

Why does it matter?

Fr. Ian Ker, a Newman scholar, seems to have closed the debate by demonstrating that Cardinal Newman wrote in his diaries about struggling with being attracted to women. It’s as if many Catholics are relieved. Whew!

What does is matter? Cardinal Newman loved his friend, Ambrose St. John. Thank God for that, and for him.
